She describes her songs as "tender observations on the world", and the names she cites as influences give you a good steer on where that sits. Judee Sill, Bridget St John and Fiona Apple are the three she mentions, and that's a particular kind of lineage: the baroque pop of Sill, the stark, open-air folk of St John, and the restless, piano-led intensity of Apple. It's a mix that leans more towards the singer-songwriter end of folk than the traditional end, so the set will be built around her own writing rather than a collection of standards.
Because it's a record launch, the night is centred on The Knife, The Needle coming out on Merge. It's a debut album, so these songs are the first full-length collection she's put together. Hearing them live at the same time they're being released is usually the best way to get a proper sense of how they're meant to sound.
The Folklore Rooms is at 12 North Street, BN1 3GJ, and the session starts at 19:30. Tickets are £15.20, on sale through seetickets.com. One thing to keep in mind: the venue is strictly over-18s, except for matinees, so you'll need to be 18 or over to get in.
