The session is built around exploring both the plants themselves and the stories attached to them. It is not just about identifying what is edible; the approach aims to link land, leaf, history, and language, demonstrating that the practice of foraging is about food, but also about much more than that. It is a session suitable for beginners, so you do not need any prior experience to join in. During the walk, there will be a chance to taste a variety of seasonal foraged foods. You will also spend time discussing the specific characteristics of common edibles, which is useful if you are looking to apply that knowledge to your own foraging in the future. By focusing on these details, the walk helps you build a foundation for recognising plants in different environments, rather than just learning a list of names.
The walk is led by Dr. Craig Jordan-Baker. He brings a specific perspective to the subject, working as a writer and academic, and he currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Brighton. His background informs the way the walk is structured, moving beyond a simple identification guide to something that integrates the narrative and historical context of the plants you will encounter.
The event is limited to 15 people, which keeps the group small and manageable for a walk-and-talk format. The cost for the session is £15. It is worth noting that the event is exclusively for members of Plot 22. However, if you are not a member yet, the process to join is straightforward and free, so you can sign up to become a member before booking your place. It is a specific way to spend a Saturday morning, combining a bit of local history with practical skills you can take away with you. Given the small capacity, it is the kind of event that requires a bit of planning if you want to secure a spot.
