The workshops are designed to explore the importance of listening during a performance, which is often the most overlooked aspect of acting. Rather than focusing on lines or blocking, the sessions use a variety of improv exercises and scene work to shift the focus onto the interaction between performers. The core idea is that by truly listening to your scene partner, you can react more naturally and build upon their creative choices in real-time. This process is intended to help participants create more believable worlds on stage, moving away from pre-planned responses and towards a more responsive, collaborative style of acting. It is a useful series for actors, students of performance, or anyone interested in developing their improvisational skills.
Robin Fry brings a significant amount of experience to these sessions, having been involved in acting and teaching improvisation across the UK since 2003. He is a familiar face in the local scene, particularly as a member of the Brighton-based comedy improv groups The Maydays and Off the Cuff. His background with these companies means the workshops are grounded in the practical realities of performing live, where the ability to adapt to a partner is essential.
The series takes place at the New Venture Theatre, which is situated on Bedford Place, Brighton, BN1 2PT. The sessions are held on 22 June, 29 June, 6 July, 13 July, 20 July, and 27 July. Each workshop starts at 19:30. Tickets are priced at £4.00 for the standard rate. You can book your spot by calling the theatre on 01273 746118 or by purchasing tickets through their online booking system.
