The show is 'sung-through', meaning the narrative is delivered entirely through music rather than spoken dialogue. It follows the familiar arc set in 19th-century France, tracking the journey of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict seeking redemption, and his long-standing conflict with the inspector Javert. The story builds towards the 1832 student uprising in Paris. You will hear the well-known songs from the original score, including I Dreamed a Dream, One Day More, Stars, Bring Him Home, and the Epilogue. It is a condensed version of the full-scale musical, running for just over two hours.
This version is licensed by Music Theatre International and Cameron Mackintosh (Overseas) Limited. Because it is a specific School Edition, there are strict requirements attached to the production. Every performer on stage must be 18 years old or younger at the time of the final performance. Additionally, the licensing agreement mandates that the show must be performed in a venue with a capacity of 500 seats or fewer. This keeps the production intimate and focused on the youth ensemble.
Tickets are priced at £14.00. It is a straightforward way to see a classic piece of musical theatre performed by a younger generation of actors. Given the nature of the School Edition license, it is a production that relies on the energy of the student cast to carry the weight of the story. If you are planning to head down to Brighton for the performance on 18 June, it is worth noting the runtime is just over two hours, so you will have a clear idea of the schedule for the evening.
